Rajasthan, in the North-West of India, is a beautiful area with many attractions for tourists. Famous for the intricate temples, majestic forts and numerous palaces and havelis, as well as ancient houses, if you’re visiting India make sure to check it out.

If you are visiting Rajasthan, make sure to pop into the Ranakpur Jain Temple Complex. It is an outstanding example of Indian architecture and as the largest temple for the Jains, it is a pilgrimage destination.

Located close to Sadri, Ranakpur is in the Pali district. Th easiest way to get there is from Udaipur, which is 95km away. Nearby is the majestic Aravalli Range of mountains, overlooking the remove valley.

The Jain Temple is made of marble, and is known for the distinct domes, shikhara, cupolas, turrets and pillared halls. There are 1444 beautifully carved pillars which support the complex. Each one is made with different designs, and amazing depictions. No two pillars are the same. Underneath it lies a huge basement, covering 48,000 square feet.

When you come, make sure to see the carving of the snakes. A single block of marble has been carved to portray over 100 snakes, all overlapping one another to form a confusing mass in which it is not clear which head belongs to which tail.

The story is that Seth Dharna Sah, a local businessman, set about the construction of the Complex in the 15th century. He was supported by the ruler of the Mewar region, Rana Kumbha. It is dedicated to Lord Adinath.

The complex is made up of many beautiful temples, such as the Sun Temple, the Amba Mata Temple, the Parsavanath Temple and the Chaumukha Temple. Each has its role to play inside the complex, and together they form an architectural wonder of classic Indian architecture.
